Through the rabbit hole
It’s feels as though I’ve fallen through the rabbit hole and I think I landed somewhere really really good this time. The past few weekends I’ve not gone to Pilates which has allowed me time with the family for a long Saturday morning walk – something we’ve not had since we’ve been back.
There is nothing quite as lovely as a long, beautiful, late Summer walk on Hampstead Heath without any timetable, just walking, wandering, up to the playground, across to the village shops and back home for a late lunch.
On the advice of my doctor I finished my contract a week early and I’ve had the most slow, marvellous week of just getting myself back. I’ve been quietly working on a project of my own, which has been an utter joy. Days of utter focus, walks under a beautiful blue sky. Slow mornings reading the paper with a cup of tea at the local café after dropping the girls off.
I am just so happy we are here. I really couldn’t think of anywhere I would rather be.

Selvedge Summer Fair
Thank goodness for other people – thank you Kay for letting me know about this. It’s tomorrow and it looks like we’ll be going.

More days like this
Somehow this morning seemed to organise itself. We arrived in true London fashion twenty minutes late, after making several phone calls from the car to Eireann, who was also running a bit late. Erin, Fatty, Jane and Kate were all there looking very fresh for people who not that long ago were sitting on a long flight.

returning

I’m back online.
Lovely NZ will be being tended to again, soon too.
Less than a week in this house. The cats fly out on Tuesday. We fly on the 16th after a couple of weeks at my brother’s. Hong Kong first. Then Auckland – currently creaking under the weight of all those feijoas. Excellent news.

Fleeting

Not been around here much of late.
I’ve been slightly grappling with the whole blog thing. The whole flickr thing.
The other day I observed the arrival of purple wisteria petals, fallen from the pergola – and thought to myself, in a past time I would have returned swiftly with my camera – and now I don’t really care. But apparently I do. Because today I returned with my camera and took, just the one photo – late evening in the front courtyard.
Soon to not be our courtyard. Soon we’re on the move again. I’m going to miss this house. This little house that’s too small for us but I think I’ve loved it more than any other house I’ve lived in even including the big one in mount albert. But that’s the one we need to be back in for the kids to grow up. They need space to move around. Big long halls to go careening down, leaping over sofas, chasing each other out into the garden and back again all through the house, up the hall, into any one of three bedrooms, rumpus room, kitchen, sunroom, living room, dining room, out onto the deck and back into the garden they go…
Every time we think we want to stay we just think of the space for the kids and we know it’s the right thing. For us. For now. Oh but do we love it here though.
People have said to us we must settle down. We must stay somewhere. We’re crazy. We’re mad. We should just settle down. In part yes, that’s absolutely right. But we’re already planning our next trip here. A different way to be here. A bit easier. A bit less of a wrench. Maybe a bit more Auckland than London, but London too nevertheless.
You know it was only the other day I noticed the wisteria.
And already it’s on its way out.

warm grey

Hello. I am busy knitting. I don’t want to stop.
Apart from to go out for big long walks on the Heath and take photos in the rain. And go out with friends to Ten Ten Tei and our old pub. And wander around Soho a bit. And come home and take photos at midnight in the rain. Cloth House. An evening out at a book signing and lecture in Covent Garden. The 24 bus home. Pret hummous salad for lunch. Wardour Mews. The caf on the Heath. Earl Grey tea. Full english breakfast (after the night that included the pub).

wednesday

This morning was lovely and quiet with Astrid out at daycare. Edith and I had a sleep on the sofa. This afternoon we collected Astrid and walked across the Heath to Swain’s Lane for coffee. It’s really starting to feel like Spring. The London sky has changed. The air is getting that lovely Summer haze.
